Writers and Boob Armor

Posted by Charles Gray on January 21, 2014

Tor Blogger EMILY ASHER-PERRIN presented a very good argument about why artists should retire “boob armor.”  The closely related “sexy armor” (which usually leaves huge parts of the female body open to injury, like the belly or thighs) should also go.

For writers, this isn’t as big of an issue, since we’re free to design our own armor along more realistic, or at least less cheesecake-pandering styles.  However, it does mean that the cover should be designed to avoid appealing to the “boob armor” approach.  That can be difficult– much of the stock art out there is fairly blatantly designed for  a sexy appeal, but it is worth it.
