Terms you need to know as a freelance writer.

Posted by Charles Gray on September 19, 2014

Carole Tice, has an excellent blog Make a Living Writing if you are involved in any type of freelance writing, you need to go there and read. One recent post she had brought up a number of terms that are commonly used in the industry:

When you’re first starting out as a freelance writer, it can feel like you’ve landed in a foreign country. Editors tend to speak in their own special jargon.

You want to pick up the lingo fast, so that you can present yourself professionally. New terms are added all the time, too.

To help you out, here’s a handy glossary of the freelance writing terms you need to know to communicate with editors and business clients without sounding like a complete noob.

She’s right– if you don’t know the lingo, you’ll come across as someone who isn’t serious and more importantly, you may drop a commission because you didn’t understand the instructions. Take a look at this list, post it and work until you understand what the words mean and you will not regret it.

Edit: Also, it’s a good idea to not post things when you’re tired. write <>right.  Bleh.
